The adult Ross's Goose at Long Point was present at the end of Hastings
Avenue on Mar 10 at 4:30 pm. The location was the same as in John Stirrat's
previous posting:
Hastings Avenue is the right turn at the end of Hwy 59 as you come south to
Long Point on the causeway. Continuing to the left will take you to Old Cut
and Long Point Prov. Park.
Hastings Ave. is sand and has some meltwater on it, but was easily passable
in a typical car. Parking is at the far end of the road. After climbing
the dune there, you will see some open water. The Ross's Goose was with
Canada Geese and Tundra Swans at the water's edge. If the bird isn't
visible, return to the parking site and walk west along the shore, checking
for additional vantage points. With reasonable care, you won't disturb the
birds.
In addition to the birds noted in the previous posting, there were 6 Wood
Ducks, 1 male Green-winged Teal, 3 Ruddy Ducks and an adult Bald Eagle.
Along the road, I saw many (apparently) newly-arrived sparrows. All of
those identified were Song Sparrows.
A very early Eastern Phoebe was seen beside the causeway, on the west side,
at Hugh St. (note also the Ontbirds posting re a phoebe the same date at
Erieau). Using Google Maps, if you search for Port Rowan, then toggle
southward, you can view the causeway and Hastings Ave. in both map and
satellite view.
To the north of Long Point, there was a very well-marked dark phase
Rough-legged Hawk (adult male). It was perched on roadside lines on Oxford
County Road 13 about 1/2 km south of Potter's Road (Cty Road 37). This site
is 6 km east of Tillsonburg.
