For those interested, the Ross's Goose was found at about 8:30 this morning feeding with Canadas in the field directly across from BSC headquarters on Front St. in Port Rowan.
As of 10 am it has moved north to the cornfield directly north of Port Rowan on the 1st Concession, just west of Reg. Rd 42 (Bay (main) St.). For those coming south on Highway 59, you can access the 1st Concession just south of the OPP Station. Turn left (east) towards Port Rowan. Look in the field on the north side just before you reach the stop sign at Reg. Rd 42. Where it will be later today or for those visiting on the weekend is anyone's guess. It has been seen almost as far west as Clear Creek on Reg. Rd. 42 and east of Port Rowan as well during the past two weeks. This is a large area. Finding it depends on searching the cornfields in the area and looking for flocks of Canada Geese. Other birds in the area this week have included increasing numbers of waterfowl. A small lead in the ice off the Port Rowan overlook is popular with a large number of diving ducks, including Canvasback, Redhead, scaup, Ring-necked, etc. Puddle ducks this week have included the first Am. Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Wood Duck and N. Pintail. In addition to the lead off Port Rowan, open water can be found along Big Creek at the causeway (and crossroads further north) as well as at the end of Hastings Drive. Please remember to venture no further west than the sand dune at the end of Hastings itself. Lee Browns WMA is still frozen solid. Landbirds in the area this week include the usual suspects as well as Fox Sparrows, Eastern Towhees, one or two E. Phoebes, increasing numbers of Rusty Blackbirds and, most notably, a Brewer's Blackbird at Old Cut earlier this week. Despite the lack of open water, there are several thousand Tundra Swans in the area feeding in cornfields. Many thousands more pushed straight through this week. With the cold weather moving in today and the storm moving up the east coast, I would not expect any new influx of swans until the warm weather returns next week. Nonetheless, this may be the peak swan weekend here at Long Point this spring. Good luck. Ron Ridout Bird Studies Canada P.O. Box 160, Port Rowan.
