An adult Little Gull, still in non-breeding plummage, was mixing it up with the hundreds of Bonaparte's on the St. Clair River. The exact location that I saw it fly past 3 times was at the end of Exmouth Street just after it turns and runs parallel to the river before it dead ends. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was on the shore in Sarnia Bay at the Boat Launch at the end of Harbour Road. Also seen from that spot was a single Common Loon. Everything else was to be expected - Common and Red-breasted Mergansers, Long-tailed Ducks... and at the Sarnia Airport a cold looking Eastern Phoebe. Unfortunately at one point they took off and flew west, presumably into the Mer Bleue, where they breed. Speaking of things rusty, what was presumably a Rusty Blackbird was feeding with a group of starlings on the south side of Smith Rd a few minutes earlier. They spent some time perched in a bare tree, but were mostly on the ground in the tall grass where they were almost invisible. In addition the light wasn't great, so I didn't get the view I would have liked. Given the habitat (open field) I immediately thought of the possibility of Brewer's Blackbird, which is an extremely rare vagrant here. The bird did call, but I have to admit I'm not as familiar with rusty blackbird calls as I should be--I rarely hear them, and I missed this species entirely last year, despite seeing 230 others in the area. I'm completely unfamiliar with Brewer's Blackbird calls. Listening to tapes later, I'd lean towards Rusty. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with rusty blackbird in open fields. Anyway, something to look for if you're in the area. Waterfowl in the area included pintail, wood ducks, green-winged teal and wigeon. No sign of the Snowy Owls in the Wall Rd area earlier in the afternoon. There were several rough-legged hawks (both light and dark phase), harriers, kestrels and red-tailed hawks. Paul Matthews, Ottawa Directions: Take 417 east and exit (#104) north on Anderson Rd. Turn right (east) on Russell and go several kms to MIlton, where turn left (north). Perrault and Smith are a few km down the road.
