At 6:00p.m. today I observed 3 WHIMBRELS from afar that were sitting at the
tip of the gravel bar on the KFN property on Amherst Island. When I arrived at
the base of the gravel bar and observed them through my binoculars they took
flight north over the lake when I immediately noticed that one had white on the
lower back, rump and uppertail coverts. It was very obvious while flying along
side the other two Whimbrels. I watched them for about 20 seconds as they flew
away.
Other birds of note were 7 BRANT, 1 MERLIN, 1 BUFFLEHEAD, 40 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS and 12 species of shorebirds including 20 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 1
RUDDY TURNSTONE.

Since nobody has posted about the Black-necked Stilt since Sarah Rupert's
report at 2:46 p.m., this is to report that the Stilt was still being seen at
5:00 p.m. at the Hillman Marsh Shorebird Habitat on May 22nd. There were at
least 2 dozen other birders at Hillman at the time. The Stilt was flying around
a bit while I was there, moving at least 3 times, so you might have to check
the whole area to re-locate it.

I did not have a camera, but several others did so hopefully they will provide
documentary evidence for this species to the OFO Rare Bird Records Committee as
it is on the Review List for Southern Ontario. It is also the first official
record for inside the Pelee Birding Area. While the species is on the Checklist
of Birds for Point Pelee the previous record was from outside the official
Pelee Birding Area.

In lesser news, there were two Willets on the beach east of Wheatley Harbour.

Thanks to all those who called me about the Stilt.

Hello bird-twitchers,

I've posted a photo of the Black-necked Stilt female (brown back instead of
glossy green in the adult male) at www.stevepike.com/rarities.html ; myself
and Micheal Simms discovered the bird at 2:35pm in the Shorebird cell at
Hillman...how could we miss it!?!

It looked quite content while feeding and resting so hopefully it will be
seen again tomorrow.

Best birding!
Steve Pike.

On Monday May 21, Leo Heyens had a pair of Western Grebes swimming
together well off shore south of Whiskey Island on Lake of the Woods
(located approx. 15km by boat south of Kenora). Leo is on the lake
fairly often and will keep an eye out to see if these birds stick
around.

Kenora is in Northwestern Ontario at the north end of Lake of the
Woods about 60km as the crowduck (local name for cormorant) flies
from Manitoba.

This morning I observed a Prairie Warbler at the Tiffin Centre just west
of Barrie (I have a few pictures). It was located by its song in the
open area under the hydro lines. Also present were a Brewster's Warbler
and a female Golden Winged Warbler. Many of the usual suspects also
present including the Black Throated Blue, Chestnut Sided, Nashville,
Yellow Rumped Warblers,Ovenbirds,Blue Headed Vireos and White Crowned
Sparrows as well. The Eastern Towhees are quite vocal and easy to
locate. A Scarlet Tanager as well.
