Today at midday an adult Black-headed Gull in full non-breeding plumage was
observed at close range sitting on the sand spit at Fish Point.

A quiet afternoon at Sauble Beach today with the Piping Plovers. Both =
adults and the 3 chicks were actively feeding in the beach weeds and =
down at the water's edge. The parents are very attentive and put on a =
great display of aggression when a Ring-billed Gull flew too close. The =
chicks were colour banded yesterday. They are still downy but have tail =
feathers in pin.=20
Visitors should look for the volunteer monitors in white Piping Plover =
t-shirts to find out where they can observe the birds safely.
Good birding,
Cindy Cartwright

This morning a single mockingbird was flying to and
from various trees and structures located at the north
end of the Holiday Inn located opposite Yorkdale Mall,
These younger trees are at the west entrance to the
hotel off of Bridgeland Avenue.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Shorebirds Increasing - Holland Landing

This morning the Holland Landing Sewage Lagoons were excellent.
Southbound shorebird numbers are increasing as the fall migration of
many adult shorebirds (not all species) is well underway. Juveniles
will follow soon.
Short-billed Dowitcher: 1 adult of the subspecies hendersoni. As I
was going into the lagoons, Paul Cannon of Toronto was coming out.
Paul perked my interest with his mention of a Short-billed Dowitcher
because dowitchers are my favourite shorebirds. I relocated it
feeding with Lesser Yellowlegs at the south end of the 4th pond. It's
a classic adult hendersoni in worn alternate (breeding) plumage with
the bright cinnamon colour extending to the undertail coverts. Bright
hendersoni are sometimes called Long-billed Dowitchers, but most
hendersoni are lightly spotted to unspotted at the centre of the
chest whereas Long-billeds are heavily/densely spotted across the
entire chest and lower neck at this date. Hendersoni is the much
commoner of the two Short-billed subspecies migrating through
southern Ontario. See two links below for photos of hendersoni (both
fresh and worn birds shown) and a worn griseus subspecies.
Hendersoni subspecies from Ontario
http://www.jeaniron.ca/Shorebirds/dowitchers.htm Griseus subspecies.
Recent photo from Labrador by Marcel Gahbauer
http://www.migrationresearch.org/lab07b.html Note that on griseus
the cinnamon colour is more or less restricted to the chest and neck.
The belly and undertail coverts are mainly white. Spotting is dense
on griseus on the chest/breast. Sides are also heavily
spotted/barred. The best field guide for identifying dowitchers is
the National Geographic Guide (4th and 5th editions). First juvenile
Short-billed Dowitchers will arrive in southern Ontario in about a month.
Least Sandpipers: 50 (not a guess) and 19 on Friday. First juveniles
expected in 2 weeks. Note that I haven't seen any Semipalmated
Sandpipers yet but expect the first ones soon. Caution: Leasts from a
distance can look like they have dark legs. Also, Leasts and other
shorebirds often get "sewage lagoon legs" covered with dark mud.
Lesser Yellowlegs: 35 adults today and 24 on Friday. First juveniles
Lessers expected in 2 weeks.
Greater Yellowlegs: 1 adult on Friday, none today. Lessers normally
far outnumber Greaters in July and August. First juvenile Greaters
expected in early August.
Spotted Sandpipers: +15 and 6 on Friday. No locally hatched fully
grown juveniles seen yet.
Killdeer: +20 and 10-12 on Friday. A mix of adults and mostly
juveniles. Juveniles are grayer than worn reddish adults and many
have retained central tail streamers of attached down feathers.
Challenge: July is an excellent month to watch for vagrant adult
shorebirds from Eurasia such as Little Stint. First Ontario record
from James Bay on 10 July 1979. Why not Holland Landing?
Directions: Please read carefully. About 50 km north of Toronto. From
Highway 401 go north on 404 to Green Lane (last exit). Go west on
Green Lane to 6th traffic light. Turn right on Yonge St. and go about
1 km and exit to Holland Landing Road. Follow winding road (no turns)
through Holland Landing for 5.6 km. Turn right on Cedar St. to
lagoons. If you get to Queensville Side Road you've gone about 1 km
past Cedar St. Do not block locked entrance to lagoons. Also do not
climb the new gate. Last year the old gate was broken off its hinges
because people climbed it. Go to small opening at left of gate to old
road. Walk 15 steps to first orange stake. Walk short distance past
large white pine to lagoon road. Wear long pants because of poison
ivy. Last summer I met York Region staff at the lagoons several
times. They were always friendly and even looked through the scope.
Good behaviour will ensure access continues.
