Much of this cloud cover however was of the cumulous variety clearly showing significant thermal activity. Winds were light from the west early becoming light to moderate northwest by mid morning. Raptor Observations: With a breeze astir early in the day along with sunny skies, kettles of Broad-wings were forming by the third hour of the count. By late morning numbers were already in the hundreds making it rather obvious that a large early season movement was underway. Large groups moved through for the remainder of the day, many passing directly overhead although sometimes very high even under the substantial cloud cover. The largest kettle was noted in the mid afternoon numbering some three thousand birds. Most other species were recorded in rather low numbers perhaps most surprisingly Turkey Vultures. Non-raptor Observations: Thousands of migrating and foraging swallows added to the confusion of trying to count Broad-wing streams. Tree and Northern Rough-winged Swallows dominated these numbers. An American Golden Plover was also noted. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Calvin Brennan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
