Highlights of reports received September 13 through September 20
from the Niagara Frontier Region include RED-
NECKED PHALAROPE, SNOWY EGRET and fall migrants.
Two reports of the rare RED-NECKED PHALAROPE this week. September 15
at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, at the north viewing blind with
eight other shorebird species. And, September 18 and 19, another
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at Lakeside Memorial Park in the Town of Hamburg.
This phalarope was in the pond by the bridge.
An immature SNOWY EGRET continues a two month stay at Tifft; there
were several reports on several days this week.
An excellent migrant fall out at Tifft on September 15. 21 warbler
species, including CAPE MAY WARBLER, ORANGE-CR. WARBLER and over 25
NASHVILLE WARBLERS, plus YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO,
WARBLING VIREO, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, LINCOLN'S SPARROW,
WHITE-THR. SPARROW, ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK and RUSTY BLACKBIRD. Another
Tifft report on the 16th included two rare finds for September, a
juvenile RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and a juvenile BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO.
Abundant migrants on September 13 in the Wyoming County Town of
Whethersfield. At a brief roadside stop, 11 warbler species with
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, SCARLET TANAGER and ROSE-
BR. GROSBEAK. Also in Whethersfield, six woodpecker species and 3
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS.
September 16 in the Genesee County Town of Alexander, a record
September count of 298 WOOD DUCKS, tallied as the ducks flew into a
beaver pond at dusk on Gilhooly Road. On a railroad pond at Old Creek
and Hunn Roads in Alexander, a good count of 45 RUDDY DUCKS with 48
WOOD DUCKS.
Other reports - At Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg, several BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS and SANDERLINGS. COMMON NIGHTHAWK over the
University Plaza in Amherst. RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD still in a
Williamsville yard. And calling GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were heard
before dawn over Shirley Avenue in Buffalo.
