Cranberry Marsh, southwest Whitby, Ontario (south down Hall's Rd. from Victoria St.) Daily Raptor Counts: Sep 24 & 5, 2007
I shall be away from Sep.28 to Oct.1 incl.--birding, cottaging, botanizing, cranberrying in the Bala area. I might even sneak in some golf. I KNOW THAT THE WONDERFUL CMRW TEAM WILL RECORD ALL DATA. For the past 2 days the Cranberry Marsh "wetland" has been drying rapidly. WE NEED RAIN. Lakefront weather conditions have not favoured hawk migration--only 14 came through in the 2 days. However, we have had some good passerines--many Am.pipits, black-billed cuckoo, brown thrasher, and a number of warblers--BAY-BREASTED, Wilson's, c.yellowthroat, chestnut-sided, Nashville, black-throated green, palm. Observation time: 8 to 10am EST on Sep.24, 8 to 12noon on Sep.25 Official Counters: Jim Skene, Doug Lockrey Observers: Bettina Murphy, Ian Cannell, Anne Anthony, Jody Melanson, Jim Munroe Weather: both mornings were humid with very little wind and a falling BP Migrating Raptor Observations: Species Sep.24 & 25 Month Total Season Total ------------------ ----------- -------------- -------------- Black Vulture 0 0 0 Turkey Vulture 2 116 118 Osprey 2 104 139 Bald Eagle 0 22 24 Northern Harrier 1 85 91 Sharp-shinned Hawk 5 1371 1389 Cooper's Hawk 1 22 24 Northern Goshawk 0 0 0 Red-shouldered Hawk 0 0 0 Broad-winged Hawk 0 3157 3171 Red-tailed Hawk 0 67 75 Rough-legged Hawk 0 0 0 Golden Eagle 0 0 0 American Kestrel 3 441 476 Merlin 0 19 21 Peregrine Falcon 0 11 11 Unknown 0 37 43 Total: 14 5452 5582 Doug Lockrey, coordinator CMRW ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
