Overcast conditions prevailed during the morning with gradual clearing occurring in the afternoon. Winds were moderate and a bit gusty throughout the day starting in the southwest but becoming westerly by the afternoon and dropping off somewhat by late afternoon. Raptor Observations: The flight was a bit slow in developing, not surprising given the cloud cover early in the day but by late morning, Sharpies were moving steadily if not heavily with the first vultures appearing once there was some open patches in the cloud at midday. TVs continued to move throughout the afternoon and even into the early evening with today being the first day when there were kettles of 100 or more individuals. Most of the falcons recorded for the day were during the last couple of hours of the count and included a Merlin that initially was seen zooming over our heads in pursuit of a Yellow-rumped Warbler. It then made a U-turn back over the channel where it preceded to chase some of the gulls feeding over the water in classic Merlin fashion. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays continued to move in large numbers today along with Tree Swallows with lesser numbers of Northern Rough-winged Swallows noted. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Calvin Brennan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
