Pat Mulawa Charlene Brennan Weather: Skies were sunny for much of the morning today with cloud cover gradually pushing into the area, becoming completely overcast by mid afternoon ahead of weak frontal system. Winds were more or less non-existent until late morning becoming light south-southeast and then light south by mid afternoon. There were some showers by days end. Raptor Observations: There were very few migrants on the go early in the day with a quick build up of birds once it warmed up a bit and the breeze kicked up. The vulture movement was heavy and non-stop for about a four-hour period from late morning to mid afternoon until the advancing system set them down again with many of those first masses of birds passing right overhead or just to the north. Later groups would drift more to the north on the breeze and into areas northward that were still in sunshine. Early in the afternoon somewhere in a group of a couple hundred birds, we surpassed our 700,000th vulture tallied in the history of the count! Also reaching a milestone today was Red-shouldered Hawk with our 15,000th counted since the beginning of the watch. Red-shoulders in general saw their best day of the season thus far with quite a few excellent views of this attractive raptor. Also highlighting the day was our second Golden Eagle in as many days.
