The definite highlight of the week was the discovery of 6 EARED GREBES at the Alfred sewage lagoons. They were 1st reported on Oct. 10th but were evidently present for a few days previous to that date. At least 5 of them were seen in the eastern cell of the lagoons on the 13th. Access to the lagoons is restricted, but please note that there is an observation tower on the south side of the lagoons which has excellent views of the ponds, and is FREE to everyone. Waterfowl numbers continue to build on the Ottawa River and other wet areas. Among the 23 species reported from various locations this week were a group of 40 Brant that briefly dropped in off Andrew Haydon Park on the 8th, 2 blue-morph Snow Geese at the large pond along Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on the 14th, increasing rafts of Greater & Lesser Scaup on the Ottawa River, and a pair of Redhead with almost countless numbers of Ruddy Ducks at the Alfred lagoons. Scattered groups of scoters were also observed on the river on the 14th including up to 25 Surf, and 3 each of White-winged and Black Scoters between Andrew Haydon Park and Shirley's Bay. On the 8th, a covey of 4 GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen along Barnsdale Rd. near Twin Elm Rd., and a larger group of approx. 15 were in a field along Giroux Rd. east of Frank Kenny Rd. on the 11th. A single Common Moorhen and cornucopia of American Coots (i.e. a lot of them!) were also at the Alfred lagoons on the 13th. The fall gathering of SANDHILL CRANES has increased exponentially over the week - so far the highest count was of 46 birds on the 13th, in the cornfields along the west side of Milton Rd. northeast of Carlsbad Springs. Eight species of shorebirds in our area this weekend included several Black-bellied Plovers, 5 Semipalmated, 1 White-rumped, 2 Dunlin and 4 Pectoral Sandpipers on the beach at Andrew Haydon, and at least 40 Killdeer, a Dunlin, 11 Pectoral Sandpipers and 9 Wilson's Snipe at the Richmond sewage lagoons on the 14th. Scanning the gulls on the river and the Moodie Dr. pond continues to produce Lesser Black-backed Gulls almost every time. Nothing new in songbird reports. Large numbers of American Pipits remain in our region, single Orange-crowned Warblers were seen at Dick Bell Park and the Britannia Conservation Area on the 8th, and good numbers of our common migrating sparrows, including White-crowned Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos are still moving through. The 13th annual Ottawa-Gatineau Fall Bird Count will be held this coming weekend, Oct 20 -21st.
