Highlights of reports received November 29 through December 6 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include NORTHERN HAWK-
OWL, YELLOW-THR. WARBLER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, NORTHERN GANNET and
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
December 1, only, a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL at the piers at Port Weller,
in St. Catharines, Ontario.
An exceptional YELLOW-THR. WARBLER, December 2, at Four Mile Creek
State Park in the Niagara County Town of Porter, on the north trail
from the end of Woodcliff Drive.
Ten gull species on the Niagara River this week. Highlighted by a
BLACK-HEADED GULL at the railroad bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario. Other
gulls from the lower river power plants, the falls and Fort Erie -
LITTLE GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RING-
BILLED GULL, HERRING GULL, THAYER'S GULL, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B.
GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and GREAT BLACK-B. GULL.
A good season for NORTHERN GANNETS on Lake Ontario - December 1, the
third recent sighting of NORTHERN GANNET passing Wilson Harbor, and
another sighting at Four Mile Creek. Also on Lake Ontario, a BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE at the east edge of the BOS region, at Point Breeze in the
Town of Carlton.
In the Lake Ontario Plains, small numbers of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and
PINE GROSBEAKS again this week in the crabapple trees at the entrance
to Fort Niagara State Park in Porter. Flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS at
numerous locations, 350 SNOW BUNTINGS in the mixed orchard at Routes
18 and 78 near Olcott, and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS,
ROUGH-
LEGGED HAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE on Lake Road in the Town of Yates.
December 4, at feeders in the Town of Wilson, an unexpected SAVANNAH
SPARROW, with WHITE-CR. SPARROW and PINE SISKIN.
Other reports this week - a well-described juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK
in the Iroquois Refuge, on Lewiston Road near Cayuga Pool. From
Buffalo, COMMON LOON off Squaw Island. Waterfowl on the Black Rock
Canal at Porter Avenue included 30 RING-
NECKED DUCKS with CANVASBACK, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP,
BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE and AMERICAN COOT. Nearby at the Erie
Basin Marina, 5 BLACK SCOTERS. On the Buffalo waterfront, off Fuhrmann
Blvd, CANVASBACKS and REDHEADS. In a Williamsville yard, YELLOW-B.
SAPSUCKER, HERMIT THRUSH and PINE SISKIN. And a SONG SPARROW at a
feeder on Lewis Road in South Wales.
