THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 9:30 am, SATURDAY DECEMBER 15, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Several interesting reports came in this past week, so here's an update
before tomorrow's Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count.

On the 14th, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK was discovered on the Ottawa River
north of Bate Island and east of the Champlain bridge. It was best seen
from the Quebec side and was still present as of at least 4:00 pm. Other
noteworthy ducks in this location as well as farther west at Deschenes
included a single Lesser Scaup and a couple of Long-tailed Ducks and
Bufflehead. On the 9th a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was still on the Rideau
River and was seen near the Hwy 417 overpass.

Eight GRAY PARTRIDGE were spotted at Ste-Rose Rd. and Concession #20 east
of Casselman on the 9th. A Snowy Owl was still present at Conc. #19 and
many Snow Buntings along with perhaps a dozen Horned Larks and a
Lapland Longspur were in the same area on the same day. At least 16 Wild
Turkeys were noted at Rideau and Limebank Rds. also on the 9th.

An unintentionally belated report of a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER
came from Gatineau Park back on Nov. 24th, by the new ski shelter along
Trail #50 near Herridge. On Dec. 13th there was a report of an extremely
late Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, along with a
single Cedar Waxwing among several hundred Bohemian Waxwings. The
OREGON JUNCO and a White-throated Sparrow were still at the Fletcher
feeders the same day.

Not many reports of Northern Shrikes have come in since the fall, however
one was seen along Diamondview Rd. on the 9th. A Carolina Wren was
present for at least 3 days until Dec. 11th and is likely still around in the
Graham Park / Qualcomm neighbourhood between Beaumaris Dr. and
Esquimault Ave. A very late GRAY CATBIRD discovered in Constance Bay
during the 1st week of December was still hanging out at a feeder on
Goodin St. as well as sheltering in cedar hedges and a garage on the 14th.
A White-throated Sparrow was also seen at #100 Rothwell Dr. on the 13th,
and two feeders along Torbolton Ridge Rd. southwest of Constance Bay
continue to host good numbers of Common Redpolls, with up to 100 at
#4544 and a single HOARY REDPOLL with a flock of 30 Common's at #4670
Torbolton Ridge on the 12th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
