Happy New Year,

Not having seen a report of this bird since Dec 29, I decided to head out to
Stoney Creek anyway and found the N. Hawk Owl, sitting atop one of the tall
trees about 500m WEST of 10th Concession just north of the RR tracks. I spoke
to another gentleman who was there and he said the bird hadn't moved in over an
hour. I checked and it was still alive! ;-)

I made some stops along the south shore of Lake Ontario but the high north
winds created some big waves, tough to spot anything! I stopped in at
Windemere Basin and there were an impressive number of waterfowl there,
including 300+ Ruddy Ducks, 50+ Northern Shoveler, 30+ Double-crested
Cormorant, 4 Hooded Mergs, 20+ Lesser Scaup, and 3 American Coot, amongst other
more common waterfowl.

LaSalle Park on Hamilton Harbour still holds 80+ Trumpeter Swans but I couldn't
find the Tundras that were there last week, I did have a Brown Creeper on the
slope on the north side of the waterfront trail and one male Canvasback in
amongst all the Swans and Ducks being fed.

Good winter birding,

DIRECTIONS:
Northern Hawk Owl - Stoney Creek
Take Fifty Road from the QEW up the escarpment. Turn right on the Ridge Road.
Go to the first sideroad, 10th Concession, and turn left. Proceed to the
railroad tracks and park on the east side. The Owl was about 500 metres west
down the railroad tracks, seen on the north side of the tracks.

Windemere Basin, is found off Eastport Drive (which parallels the QEW's
Skyway), turn west off Eastport into an area signed "Pier 23, 24 & 25", you
will see a large metal building on the left with a truck wash in front, the
basin is next to the parking lot of this building.

LaSalle Park is at the south end of Waterdown Road, south of North Shore Blvd.,
on the north shore of Hamilton Harbour.
