Today Peter & Daniel Hogenbirk, Terrie Smith and I did a pilgrimage to search for some of the rarities hanging around.
Hawk Owl - Stoney Creek - found at 7:45 a.m., 2 White-crowned Sparrows and Flicker were seen near 50 Road and QEW 19 Double-cr Cormorants with ducks at Redhill Creek - Hamilton - 8:15 3 Gray Partridge at Brantford Airport - 9:30 Yellow-thr Warbler at port Burwell - 10:30; 2 Tufted Titmice and Red-bellied Woodpecker were also feeding with the warbler Turkey Vulture and Northern Goshawk at Clear Creek and Cty Rd. 42 Long Point area - 25 Sandhill Cranes, 18 Rough-legged Hawks, 5 Bald Eagles (on ice with Tundra Swans) and 50 [by actual count] Lapland Longspurs (just east of Lee Brown's farm on Cty Rd 42) + 4 Pied-billed Grebes at small bridge at north end of Causeway Fisherville - 2 Short-eared Owls 5 Bluebirds at Fisher's Glen Directions: Yellow-throated Warbler >> >> 3 Bridge St (there is no number displayed at the road) >> Cross the bridge in town centre heading west and take the first >> turn to the right. There is a sign there for Otter Creek Camping. >> Preferably park near that sign and walk up the driveway to the >> house at the top of the hill. >> The preferred feeder for this bird is on the south side of the >> house in an arbor. >> Many other birds should be around too - but the good weather >> reduced all traffic this week. Gray Partridge: Brantford Airport - from Hwy 403 just west of Brantford, exit at Rest Acres Rd (Hwy 24), head south to Colborne Rd (Hwy 2) and turn left/east. The airport terminal is north of Colborne Rd, turn at Airport Rd and then once inside the airport property turn right on York. Near the end of the straightaway, there is a low long brown building on your left and a derelict plane in the field to the right of the building. Between these is a snowy driveway (private property) so stay on the main road). The birds were on a small grassy patch on the edge of the driveway (easily visible from York Rd) Hawk Owl: Take the QEW to Niagara / Stoney Creek area, and take Fifty Road South to the escarpment top., Turn right at the stop sign at Ridge Rd., and go less then 1km to the first street on the left, 10th concession., turn left and go to the RR tracks. The bird today was about 300' north of the 10th and about 50" east of the tracks. _______________________________________________ Geoff Carpentier Ajax, Ontario _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
