I just returned from there (I arrived around 4:30 p.m., Friday) and couldn't
find the Western. There was an Eastern Kingbird and a Song Sparrow perched
on a bare branch sticking up from a pile of wood on the south side of the
path, a short distance in. I walked east, a little way past the location
mentioned. In the twenty or so minutes I was there I also saw two crows, a
grackle, a Red-winged Blackbird and a flicker, and thought (but can't be
certain) that I heard a snatch of the call of a Black-billed Cuckoo from the
other (west) side of the road, but didn't have time to confirm. I did go
in, and past, that deep gully, but I'm not sure I saw the right
snag...still...I took a good look around.
