Not a stellar day at the Port Perry lagoons this Saturday, August 2, but some interesting sightings. Water levels continue very high - Geoff Carpentier has talked to the Works Dept. but they will be unable to discharge any effluent from the lagoons until October 15 at the earliest so we'll have to hope for a hot, dry August (not a good start so far). Almost all the action today was in the most westerly lagoon, the half-sized one, where Boneys, a few shorebirds, and a motley crew of ducks were feeding busily. 163 Boneys, 2/3 with complete black hoods; one gingery juv. among them. 1 ad. and one juv. Black Tern 5 Spotted Sandpipers, but not one Killdeer 6 Greater Yellowlegs, 24 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Least Sandpiper - the only peep seen
9 ad. Redhead - 5 male, 4 female 1 ad. f. Common Goldeneye 7 imm. Hooded Mergansers 1 ad. male Ruddy Duck still in brilliant breeding plumage Several Mallard families; 2 Am.Black Duck 30+ Blue-winged Teal, 10+ Green-winged A few N. Shovelers and N.Pintail Resident pair of Trumpeter Swans with 2 growing cygnets The 2 Osprey young are now flying well - 1 being fed at the nest, one calling from a bare tree north of lagoons. A very bright orange, very dead medium-sized goldfish or koi discarded at edge of nest. $5 permits for the Nonquon Sewage Lagoons must be purchased in advance from the Durham Region Transfer Site at 1623 Reach Rd, Port Perry on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12 past Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 = Reach Rd.] and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road. The lagoons are one road north of the transfer site, east off Hwy 12 on Concession Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are both numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a regional paved road, the other a dirt concession road.] Margaret Bain Cobourg [EMAIL PROTECTED] _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
