Bill Watson and I spent the afternoon in the Niagara region in search of the above species, unfortunately coming up empty, although it turned out to be a nice day otherwise. A fair number of Killdeer, plus 3 juv. Greater Yellowlegs were present at Jaeger rocks between about 2-3 p.m., while out on the lake were at least 7 SURF SCOTERS, 3 Long-tailed Ducks, and a small raft of dark-winged Scoters. The water level on north Erie shore was extremely low and therefore there was an extensive amount of rocky shoreline extending out and to the west for birds to feed on. Checking to the west at Waverly Beach and Kraft Rd., the only shorebirds we came across were 4 juv. Black-bellied Plovers and a small flock of Killdeer. We then headed north to St. Catharines and waited for the White-winged Dove at 4 Missisauga Rd. from about 3:45-5:15 p.m. Several Mourning Doves came in to feed around the 5:00 primetime, but unfortunately without the White-winged. Just as we were getting ready to leave, a flock of roughly 60 PINE SIKINS flew by heading westward along the lakeshore. We then checked out the Avondale Cannery Ponds on Stewart Rd. and found the lingering and perhaps ill adult HUDSONIAN GODWIT in the furthest north pond. Keeping the Godwit company were 3 juv. Pectoral Sandpipers, a Wilson's Snipe, and a few American Pipits. Lastly, a CACKLING GOOSE flew over heading north with a small flock of Canadas. Jim Pawlicki Amherst, NY Directions (WW Dove): fide Kayo Roy: From the QEW, take the Niagara Street exit in St. Catharines and go north on Niagara Street. Immediately over the QE Highway at the first lights, the road forks with Vine Street going to the left, and Niagara Street to the right, with a Sunoco gas station in the middle of this fork. Take a left here onto Vine Street and at 4.1 km you will be at the lights at Lakeshore Road. Continue north through the lights another 2/10ths of a km to the first street on your left, Old Coach Road. Turn left here and go two streets on your right to Mississauga Road, house #4. Jaeger Rocks is present on the Lake Erie shoreline in Fort Erie which is well signed at the eastern terminus of Lake Erie at the Niagara River. **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination.
