Highlights of reports received October 16 through October 23 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include SAY'S PHOEBE, EARED GREBE, and
PINE SISKINS.
October 22, a SAY'S PHOEBE was reported at the Batavia Waste Water
Plant. After the initial find, the PHOEBE has not been re-located. If
verified, this would be the first record of this western species in
the BOS region.
Also at the Waste Water Plant, 3 EARED GREBES, 268 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS and 285 RUDDY DUCKS, plus WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER,
BONAPARTE'S GULL, 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS and AMER. TREE
SPARROW.
October 23, a very unexpected report of a LA. WATERTHRUSH at the
Buffalo Psychiatric Center.
The widespread irruption of PINE SISKINS continued this week.
October 19, 490 PINE SISKINS along the Lake Ontario shore in the Town
of Wilson. At the southern limit of the region, 35 PINE SISKINS at
Allegany State Park. In the Town of Tonawanda, 5 flyover PINE SISKINS,
and in Amherst, a single PINE SISKIN at a feeder. Also, a flock of
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS this week in the Orleans County Town of Yates.
October 18, waterbirds moving on Lake Ontario at Golden Hill State
Park included RED-THROATED LOON, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED
GREBE, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, SURF SCOTER,
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD,
COMMON GOLDENEYE and RED-BR. MERGANSER. October 19 at the Wilson
Piers, 810 COMMON LOONS on the water.
An OSPREY continued this week at Amherst State Park, along with
LINCOLN'S SPARROW and 2 FOX SPARROWS.
From Chautauqua County this week, an almost-late INDIGO BUNTING,
October 10, over Muzzy Hill Road in the Town of Harmony. In Hanover,
BALD EAGLE and MERLIN at the mouth of Cattaraugus Creek. On the Silver
Creek upper reservoir, 64 RING-NECKED DUCKS. Two RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS
at the Meadows Road State Land in Arkwright, 13 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at
the Dunkirk Airport, and 19 FIELD SPARROWS on the abandoned railroad
bed at Cassadaga in Stockton.
Other reports - at Wolf Run in Allegany State Park, BALD EAGLE, 2
BARRED OWLS and 3 COMMON RAVENS. And in North Tonawanda, GREAT HORNED
OWL calling on Ruie Road.
