On November 5 35 Sandhill cranes were seen outside of Navan a village within
the boundaries of Ottawa, Ontario. They were seen around 12:30 pm in a
cornfield near the intersection of Smith Road and Milton Road. Initially there
were about six cranes, then groups of two three and four came in over the span
of half an hour until there were 35 cranes in total. This spectacle was
observed by four birders; however in a return visit yesterday there was none to
be seen. These cranes have been observed previously in the Mer Bleu area.
They have a unique sound which was very easy to identify as differnt from the
many Cananda Geese in the area.
