An odd thing happened at today's Cranberry Hawk Watch. A well-meaning woman came to feed the birds as many others do. She left small piles of caramel covered popcorn along the path. A blue jay inspected one and found it unpalatable and went on to more tasty things. Soon a chickadee flew down onto the path to feed and, although it wasn't interested in the popcorn, it bumped up against a large kernal and promptly the sticky surface of the popcorn "glued" the chickadee's wing to its flank. After a brief struggle, the bird freed itself, flew off and preened the sugar off its plumage.
I immediately collected the rest of the popcorn and finding it too dirty to eat (this stuff is delicious you know!) discarded it. Pls think about what you bring to feed the birds! P.S. the Avocet seems to have departed - not seen for two days now.
