At 8:30 am, Thursday December 4, 2008 this is Chris Lewis reporting.

For the past several days, snow flurries and temperatures around the
freezing mark have been signs that we're heading towards winter...and the
Christmas bird counts! The Ottawa-Gatineau CBC will held on Sunday Dec. 14.
Information can be found on the "Coming Events" page of the OFNC web site at
www.ofnc.ca

In the meantime....a group of 4 Snow Geese have been seen on and off at
Andrew Haydon Park, most recently on Nov. 29th.
On the 30th a female-plumaged White-winged Scoter was associating with a few
Greater Scaup and Common Goldeneye on the Ottawa River at the west end of
Andrew Haydon. Two male Barrow's Goldeneye were reported from the Rideau
River near the Hurdman bridge on the 27th along with 3 Wild Turkeys. On the
morning of the 3rd, 2 Bald Eagles and an adult Golden Eagle were noted at
the rifle range by Shirley's Bay. Back on the 26th an adult Northern Goshawk
was lurking around the OFNC bird feeder at the Jack Pine Trail, and an adult
Peregrine Falcon was hunting near the Woodroffe campus of Algonquin College
on the 1st. Another Peregrine, an immature bird, was also active in the
fields along Barnsdale Rd. on the 24th.

Numbers of "white-winged" gulls were building up at the Moodie Dr. quarry
pond and the Trail Rd. landfill last week - 16 Iceland and 22 Glaucous Gulls
were counted on the 24th. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was also seen at Andrew
Haydon Park on the 30th. A Great Horned Owl was seen flying over Blair Rd.
near the CSIS building on the evening of the 28th, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL
discovered on Dec. 1st in Gatineau, Quebec in a field along Blvd. Hurtubise
east of Rue Campeau was still present on the 3rd, and an evening visit to
Earl Armstrong Rd. east of Bowesville Rd. on the 29th revealed 4 Short-eared
Owls near the "S" curve in the road.

A few Horned Larks, 4 Lapland Longspurs and a large concentration of Snow
Buntings were noted in the vicinity of Eagleson and Brownlee Rds. on the
26th. An unspecified number of Bohemian Waxwings along with a half-dozen
each of White-winged Crossbills and Evening Grosbeaks were found in the
Eardely-Masham area on the 3rd, and 2 different VARIED THRUSHES have showed
up in our region - one at a feeder in Deep River (most recently reported
on Nov. 30th), and another in Gatineau, Quebec, near the Universite du
Quebec en Outaouais on Dec. 2nd.

Thank you - Good Birding!
