Yesterday, January 2, I and my anonymous birding companion walked into Wheatley
Provincial Park and found a number of trees with a great deal of scaling from
what must be either a Black-backed Woodpecker or, less likely, an American
Three-toes Woodpecker. The trees that were affected were located just behind
the building at the actual entrance to the park. I don't know trees well at
all, but it was interesting that the same kind of tree was scaled in every
case. The amount of scaling clearly indicates that the bird responsible has
been present for a while. We spent a great deal of time looking for it, and
waiting for its possible return to that area since it looks like a favorite
spot that may be on a feeding circuit as it were. If anyone should pursue this
and be fortunate to locate the bird, PLEASE post it on ONTBIRDS for the benefit
of myself and others who would really like to see it.
