At 8:30 am, Wednesday February 04, 2009 this is Chris Lewis reporting.
Very little change on the local birding scene. Great Gray Owls continue to
dominate the reports, with up to 6 seen in the area northwest of Dunrobin,
and others reported from March Valley Rd. in Kanata and Upper Dwyer Hill Rd.
west of Corkery, all within the past week. The most recent report of the
Northern Hawk Owl in the Crystal Beach area was on the 27th, and a Snowy Owl
was seen along Eagleson Rd. on the 1st.
Among other winter lingerers were the male Barrow's Goldneye on the Rideau
River south of the Hurdman bridge and 5 Gray Partridge on Maple Grove Rd. in
Kanata on the 2nd, the Red-shouldered Hawk at Old Carp Rd. and Gourlay Lane
and the Black-backed Woodpecker in Poland (west of Lanark) on the 29th, and
the Varied Thrush west of Watson's Corners on the 2nd.
Numbers of Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Grosbeaks appear to be increasing.
White-winged Crossbills, Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins continue to be
seen in many locations. Apart from 54 rather flighty Evening Grosbeaks
counted at the feeders on Shawmorr Lane in Poland on the 4th, the only other
report of this species was of a couple of small flocks at feeders on the
north and west sides of the Larose forest on the 31st.
Thank you - Good Birding!
