While birding this afternoon in Port Weller on the west side of the canal today, I came across a Western Grebe close to shore in the canal. It surfaced long enough for me to get my binoculars on it but dove under before I could get my camera on it. I waited for quite some time but did not see it re-surface & I couldn't re-locate it. The large grebe had more dark around the eyes. The bill was darker greenish yellow and not the bright yellow of a Clark's grebe. Directions: take either Lake St., Ontario St. cut off from QEW and head north to Lakeshore Rd. and head east toward the Welland Canal. When you reach the canal cross the bridge to Seaway Haulage Rd. & turn left (north). You will then cross Broadway St. & go to the end of the road ( the is a boat storage facility there). There is a newer stone pathway to the left adjacent to the canal. I saw the Grebe about half way down the path from the end. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
