Several of us introduced ourselves, with the help of Lou Probst, to a trail which leads into the new Prairie Smoke Nature Reserve that straddles the north end of Cameron Ranch in the Carden Alvar on Saturday, April 4. Then, at noon we went over to Wylie Rd. --a long-tailed bird flew in front us to perch in a fallen cedar at the northwest corner of Wylie and McNamee, the eastern extension of county rd.6. Indeed, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE entertained us for 15 minutes. In the same area were many Eastern Bluebirds, a male Northern Harrier, and an Eastern Meadowlark.
I was so happy to have Rosemary Oliver, Janice Melendez, Ron Stephenson, Ross Lamb, John Howden and John Foster with me. We had driven north up hy.12 out of Whitby, turning east at hy. 48, through Bolsover, north on the Centennial Park Rd. to county rd.6, then east onto McNamee, to Wylie Rd. Upon our return to Pickering we sat on the Oliver's back porch to enjoy the many birds at the feeders and ground--including an Eastern Towhee and a Fox Sparrow. A number of Ontbirds people know the location.
