It has been a quiet week locally with warbler migration switching over to sparrows. There are the expected hordes of White-throats mixed in with Song, Swamp, Field and the odd Chipping Sparrow. White-crowned and Dark-eyed Juncos are still relatively uncommon. The only warbler reports were from well north of the city; Blackpoll, Yellow-rumped and a Black-throated Green. At Bedford Mills there was a Black-billed Cuckoo last Friday and a Whip-poor-will singing up until Monday. Near Westport, five Am. Kestrels in close proximity and a Blue-headed Vireo last weekend were noteworthy.
There was a moderate night flight on the 28/29 with lots of "peeps and squeaks". Several hundred Swainson's and a few hundred Gray-cheeked Thrushes were tallied. Near Camden East this afternoon a flock of Wild Turkeys put on an interesting show. They were scattered over a couple of hundred metres roosting in tall trees adjacent to a large hayfield. They flushed, not en masse, but in ones and twos, with a loud flutter of wings. After flying only a few metres they went into a silent glide that carried them across the field. When they landed they regrouped, got their bearings, then ran (I think they run faster than they fly) into the hedgerow on the far side of the field.
