An additional half dozen visitors stopped by only briefly, including Evelyn from Leamington. However, it's Jim McCoy who deserves special praise for his much-appreciated help with spotting and counting throughout the day. Weather: Mostly to partly cloudy skies with a high cloud layer building over late in the day. Steady Northwest to North-northwest winds at 10 to 15 mph, and gusts to 25 mph. Temps. ranged from 7.9 to about 10C. Raptor Observations: A new third place high count of Turkey Vulture at 6,788. Also, the greatest single-day species total this season with 14, which was highlighted by 2 light morph Swainson's Hawks and an ad. Golden Eagle. Undoubtedly the best bird of the day, a Mississippi Kite, was NOT observed from the Hawk Tower, but by Phil Roberts and Claude and Nina Radley at close range. Non-raptor Observations: 13 species of waterfowl, D-c. Cormorant- 23 (southbound flock), Great Egret- 10, Black-crowned Night-Heron- 4 (2 subad., 2 juv.), Common Moorhen- 4 (lingering), Bald Eagle- 2 local ad., Caspian Tern- 3, Common Nighthawk- 2, Chimney Swift- 5, Tree Swallow- 200, N. Rough-winged Swallow- 25+, Blue Jay- 13,150, Am. Crow- 965 (first significant movement), Golden-crowned Kinglet- 10, Ruby-crowned Kinglet- 15, Am. Pipit- 15+, Cedar Waxwing- 12+, Blue-headed Vireo- 2, Warblers noted include Orange-crowned(3), Nashville(1), Yellow-rumped(35+), Palm(1), and Common Yellowthroat(1). Eastern Meadowlark- 3, Am. Goldfinch- 1,425, Predictions: Overcast skies with a PM rain shower possible. North to Northeast winds at 5 to 15 mph. High of 8C.
