Good Sunday morning, Fellow Birders:
Once again it's great to report that Mr. P. is 'up with the birds' and looking
as wonderful as ever. I've just watched him for approx. 45 minutes as he dined
on tiny red rose hips followed by a dessert of black buckthorn berries. Between
courses, he posed high in the bushes catching the last few rays of the sun
before it was blanketed by a curtain of thick grey clouds. He was vocalizing
and tail-pumping when he moved from one bush to the other. Although Mr. P.
seems quite 'tame' it's easy to take advantage of his obliging ways. However,
there has been noted, a change in his behaviour, in that he is taking more and
more time to scope out his territory before dining. As we know, with this
cooler weather, he requires nourishment more frequently, to ensure decent
energy levels. Perhaps, we could just give him a little more space when viewing
and photographing, to ensure his best possible chances of survival. Although he
put on a valiant effort last weekend, to fend off the mockingbird, it's become
evident throughout this week that the mockingbird 'rules the roost' and
continually forces Mr. P. to leave his food source. We also have the resident
Merlin to contend with and as I was returning from watching Mr. P. this
morning, I also saw the Merlin surveying his domain, from his favourite perch
atop the tall tree in front of 94/92 Addington. It's just a matter of time
before he makes his presence known and every bird scurries for cover and all is
quiet for a while.
Good birding and good luck.Dian
