Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for May 7, 2010:
Birders woke to cloudy skies, brisk southeast winds, and an approaching
storm. Prior to the rain, an adult LAUGHING GULL (possibly the same bird
from a few days ago) stood right next to an adult BONAPARTE’S GULL on the
very tip allowing for a nice comparison. A lone DUNLIN also walked around
amongst the gulls. Compared to the thousands of BONARPARTE’S GULLS that
were seen at the tip yesterday, almost none were evident today. Also the
terns chose another location to loaf. Offshore a COMMON LOON, and all three
SCOTER species were reported. Close to the tip, a male HOODED WARBLER sang
regularly but it was more difficult to see, keeping down low in the shrubs.
A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was observed west of the tip tram stop.
At about 8:30 a.m., the rain finally arrived followed soon thereafter by
thunder. Nevertheless, Tilden’s Woods was very productive. Numerous pockets
of warblers were actively feeding, most up high in the tree tops. A number
of BLACKBURNIAN, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, NASHVILLE, BLACK-AND-WHITE and
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were in evidence. Also scattered amongst them were
BLACK-THROATED BLUE, TENNESSEE, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, OVENBIRD, AMERICAN
REDSTART, several SCARLET TANAGERS, and PHILADELPHIA VIREO. A LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH was described from the wet spot along Shuster’s Trail.
AYELLOW-BREASTED CHAT called a few times nearby.,
We are waiting for the thunder and lightning to stop before new birds are
reported.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was reported from Hillman Marsh yesterday afternoon. The
WHITE-FACED IBIS also continues to be reported (yesterday) from along Big
Creek at Malden Centre, Essex County.
Good Birding,
