In spite of cool, blustery weather, the following species were observed on the main lake today:
Black Tern - several pairs in East Bay and on the main lake Least Bittern - one calling in East Bay Virginia Rail - on calling on main lake Marsh Wren - several singing males Pied-billed Grebe Common Moorhen Wilson's Snipe - several Bald Eagle - adult As many as 15 Sandhill Cranes were feeding in surrounding corn fields. Great Egret - possibly a breeding pair - was observed in a constructed wetland north of County Road 15, west of Monticello. Roughed-Grouse and at least 6 fledglings - observed at roughly the same location as above. Northern Harrier - 2 foraging over marshes Please note that the GRCA charges an access fee.
