Weather: Little to no winds this morning, nor where there any clouds. Very hazy in the upper levels of the atmosphere, made it very difficult to pick out the high-flying raptors. Temperatures where very mild, as long as you where in the shade. Raptor Observations: Fairly slow compared to the last two days. However the haziness made it difficult to find the raptors. Many migrants where probably missed as they where flying too high. This did not stop the great hawk watching, as quality is sometimes better than quantity. A single Prairie Falcon made a appearance heading southwest over the count site. It was a readily identifiable adult with typical falcon shape and dark axillaries. Sadly no picture was obtained, but every hawk watcher had good looks. Non-raptor Observations: Another rarity for the state of Michigan passed northwest over the parking lot around 2pm today. A White-winged Dove flew over the official counters head. Besides the white stripes on the wings, the short squared tail with the pale gray tip stood out, as did the overall chunkiness of the bird in comparison to the local Mourning Doves. It does help that the counter is from Tucson, AZ where White-winged Doves are the most numerous bird of the summers. Predictions: Tomorrow should be a continuation of our great weather. We expect lots of migrants to come through before Thursday, when a storm from the west is due to arrive. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
