Not too many hawks but a good day for a tan. Weather: Very hot, windy, and worst of all extremely hazy. Winds where very light at the count site itself, but oddly enough gusts in excess of 35mph could be seen wreaking havoc on the canopy of the surrounding trees. Every once in a while the gusts would drop a couple dozen feet to our lever and we had to chase our Doritos. Temperatures topped out at an amazing 94f degrees (34.44c). Raptor Observations: Raptor migration was hard to judge today. If they where moving we could not see them. The high temperatures created thermals so tall that if there where birds on them they would be invisible amidst the low lying haze and the clear bluish sky. Wind was very strong at normal elevations for raptor flights, mixed with south west winds pushed our birds far north of sight. We had an even 50 birds counted of only 3 species. Non-raptor Observations: Predictions: Tomorrow we expect some unpredictable rain. It will either rain all day or not at all, depends on what weather station you look at. It will probably be a repeat of today's less than favorable conditions. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
