Visitors:
Thanks to the usual suspects that helped with today's count...Colin, Jim,
Mary, Jen , Derek, Steve, Kathy and Alf
Visitors today were Don and Bev Bailey (Bracebridge), Trudy Rasing and
Sheila Fletcher (T.O.) and a few others whose names didn't get recorded.
Weather:
Well...another strange weather day with an interesting ending. The morning
started with fog that eventually broke out (just like yesterday) to a mix
of sun and cloud. The temp made it to a high of 20C. The winds were
initially very light from the SE and then S. It then swung round to the W
and stayed there for a few hours. Then suddenly, just after mid-afternoon
the wind picked up signifcantly becoming strong out of the NW for the last
couple of hours of the count period.
Raptor Observations:
With the humid and foggy start there weren't many birds for the first few
hours. However, with a slight change in the wind direction and eventually
getting stronger the birds made a late in the day move for a total of 868.
The bulk of today's flight were TV's and Sharpies. There were still a few
Broadwings and some really nice Merlin flybys.
Non-raptor Observations:
It was another fine day today for those interested in spotting migrating
songbirds, with warblers, vireos, kinglets and such virtually dripping from
the trees and bushes. Our total warbler species list expanded today to 26
in total with today's sightings of ORANGE-CROWNED & CONNECTICUT WARBLERS
(the latter spotted by Derek...let's just hope it's there again for Friday
morning!). As well, today's total warbler count of 12 included MAGNOLIA,
BLACKBURNIAN, YELLOW-RUMPED, PALM, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BLACKPOLL, BLACK &
WHITE, NASHVILLE, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and a single NORHTERN PARULA, which
although not a new species for this season is not an everyday species and
thus, always great to see.
Additional songbird highlights included 3 species of vireo (PHILADELPHIA,
RED-EYED, BLUE-HEADED VIREOS), several YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS (both
adult and juvenile), BROWN CREEPER and a first for this fall, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW.
Predictions:
Given the way today ended....I would expect tomorrow to bring a good sized
flight...especially with the predicted strong NW and N winds and a mix of
sun and cloud.
