The bird of the week was no doubt the Vermilion Flycatcher seen on Wolfe Island
near Button Bay on Wednesday afternoon by a group of Kingston area birders. The
bird was reported locally but efforts to refind it the next day were
unsuccessful. The rest of the sightings in this report will be more mundane but
there are some good birds around.
A late report had a Surf Scoter in Elevator Bay on Oct. 4th, 250 Brant flew
over Charleston Lake P.P. on Saturday and 23 Ring-necked Ducks were at Bedford
Mills yesterday. A Red-necked Grebe was seen off Garden Island on Sunday and
five Sandhill Cranes stood in an empty field near Crosby yesterday.
A Little Gull was reported again from the lagoons last Friday along with
several shorebirds including Dunlin, White-rumped and a Baird's Sandpiper.
There were more White-Rumped on Amherst Island on the weekend and the Hudsonian
Godwit remained for at least three days. There were also 4 immature
Black-crowned Night-Herons on the KFN property on Tuesday. N. Saw-whet and
Long-eared Owls are moving through with several reports with differing numbers
of birds.
Fox Sparrows were widespread this week as were Purple Finches. A lone Pine
Siskin was at Bedford Mills on Monday and the area's first Snow Buntings were
seen over the penitentiary property last week.
