Lisa Silvey and John Winebrenner of Fort Wayne, Indiana made their annual pilgrimage. Merryz MacRae of Royal Oak, MI was back for her 3rd or 4th time and brought a friend from Caro, up in the "Thumb" of MI. There were also 5 residents of Essex-Windsor who stopped by. Weather: Temperature ranged from 13.5 - 15.5, winds moderate to calm out of the SW shifting to S in mid-afternoon, 60 - 100% cloud cover with slight drizzle off and on after noon. Raptor Observations: 26 individuals of 5 species with Sharp-shins dominating at 19. Two male Northern Harriers came in off the lake and right over the tower before hunting the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: First of all a big thanks to Larry Ludwicki and John Winebrenner for taking over from me at 1 pm since I was not schedued to be the Official Counter-Coordinator for the day. Many passerines and other species migrating today. Six Great Egrets were flying high, just below the cloud level early in the morning following by a flock of 70 Wood Ducks. Clouds of Starlings and other Black-birds steamed by most of the day. Other species of note included: Am. Crow - 346; Am. Robin - 155; Blue Jay - 36; 3 flocks of Killdeer totaling 16 birds; Rusty-Blackbird - 22; lost track of the number of Black-capped Chickadees and Golden-crowned Kinglets but both species over 100. At least 12 N. Cardinals circled the tower all day. Species of less than 5 individuals included: Common Loon; Purple Finch; Red-breasted Nuthatch; Winter & Carolina Wrens; Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers and Northern Flicker; Song, Swamp and White-throated Sparrows; Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Greater Yellowlegs.
