Ontbirders, I located a flock of 18 Red Crossbills this morning, near Beachville, just west of Woodstock. The Crossbills stopped briefly but then continued swiftly westward, following the Thames River. In terms of other finches, locally, both Pine Siskin and Purple Finch continue to be seen in smallish numbers most days.
The Purple Finch migration [that typically starts in early Sept.] has been moderately strong [up to 20 birds daily] this fall, with numbers starting to fall off. The recent trend has been for most Purple Finches to have departed before December, leaving almost none to winter. Beachville can be reached by taking exit 222 from the 401 north to Beachville Road then east into Beachville. The best access spot is from Domtar Line, just east of the Museum.
