Weather: Sunny in the morning turning to partly cloudy with a high of 18C. Winds were strong out of the S 18-20 km/hr with gusts to 30. Raptor Observations: Strong S winds kept things slow, but small numbers of Vultures were up and flying, although most stuck around kiting in the winds at the shoreline. A few Sharp-shins were darting by along with a few Red-tails and Kestrels, and single Cooper's Hawk and N. Harrier. Four local Bald Eagles (2 juv., 2nd-yr., ad.) put on a nice show tumbling and talon-grappling in the high winds. Also for the first time in a while the 2 local juv. Ospreys did not put an appearance. Non-raptor Observations: Two Cave Swallows heading E at 2:54 pm EST (see separate Ontbirds post for details). Also single Tree and N. Rough-winged Swallows heading W, fly-by Common and Red-throated Loons, 5 Greater Yellowlegs, 4 Pectoral Sandpipers, 22 Am. Golden Plovers, Wilson's Snipe, and Solitary Sandpiper (at the pond). Horned Larks were moving with 52 tallied, along with 41 Chickadees, 9 Purple Finches, 43 Cedar Waxwings, and 94 C. Grackles. Predictions: Mostly cloudy and cold with a 50% chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Winds WSW 20-25 km/hr with a high of 8C. Few raptors expected, but Vultures and Sharp-shins should be up in the air if the rain holds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
