Weather: Mostly cloudy in the morning, clearing to mostly sunny by the afternoon with a high of 11C. Winds were out of the SSW 8-12 km/hr. Raptor Observations: Very slow. The day's first migrant raptor (Cooper's Hawk) didn't pass by till 10:00, while the flight shut off abruptly around 2:00. Only a few Red-tails, Cooper's Hawks, and single Sharp-shin. A small group of 5 late Vultures drifted by along the lakeshore, followed by a single during the 10:00 hour. Also seen was a 2nd-yr. Bald Eagle along with 2 juv. Golden Eagles that were hunting the distant west end of the marsh. After flying around low and perching in a few of the trees for a good half hour, they eventually continued on over the treeline to the west. A late local Osprey carrying a fish appeared twice over the distant treeline to the NW during the 2:00 hour, and didn't seem to be in a hurry to leave anytime soon. Non-raptor Observations: Rusty Blackbirds are starting to become the most common Blackbirds around as of late with 216 observed, while a/the Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Winter Wren continue to hang out around the tower with a few Golden-crowned Kinglets and Chickadees. Am. Goldfinches and Horned Larks were moving overhead throughout the day with 280 and 252 tallied, respectively. Predictions: Mostly cloudy with rain beginning early in the afternoon. Winds NE 30 km/hr with a high of 12C. Finally some north winds, although not without rain included that will more than likely slow things down. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
