John and Chris Craft also stopped by in the afternoon, along with 5 park visitors. A special thanks to Bob Pettit of Flat Rock, MI for sponsoring today and tomorrow as "Days of HBMO Research." Weather: Mostly sunny and cold (high of 6C) with SW winds 14-16 km/hr subsiding to 8-10 km/hr in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: A few Red-tails on the move, along with singles of Bald Eagle (juv.), Sharp-shinned Hawk, and N. Harrier. Three Golden Eagles (all subads.) drifted through high out over the N treeline during the 10 and 11:00 hours. In addition to the migrant juv. Bald Eagle, 2 local juvs., a local 1st-yr., and a resident adult also put in appearances throughout the day. Non-raptor Observations: The day's highlight was a flock of 50 Sandhill Cranes first spotted by Gwen Gidge as they passed low over the marsh for great looks during the 11:00 hour. Horned Larks (113) and Am. Goldfinches (38) were still on the move, along with a few small flocks of Tundra Swans. Also seen was a distant raft of 1,500+ Scaup that briefly rose up from the lake en masse before putting back down on the water. Predictions: Partly cloudy with SE winds 20 km/hr and high of 7C. Not ideal given the south winds, but should be a few raptors on the move. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
