Hi Ontario birders. An earlier version of this message has been approuved by Mark Cranford. Thanks Mark. The Alfred Sewage Lagoons is well know as one of the best birding spot in Eastern Ontario. The site has become a breeding mecka for numerous species that were not even present in the area decades ago, in addition to being visited by numerous migrants. No need to say that birders are highly intereted in this site, and many visit regularly. The municipal authorities have done a lot to enhance that habitat for breeding birds and to accomodate birders. It appears though that they are now having to make difficult decisions to ensure that the lagoons efficiently do their job; the accumulation of cattail debris over the years appears to be the problem. This summer Jacques Bouvier was asked by members of the Council to determine which breeding birds would be affected by the removal of all the cattails at the lagoons and they have invited him to present his results to the Alfred-Plantagenet Municipal Council at a meeting to be held at the Plantagenet Community Hall this coming Monday, December 6, at 7:00PM. Jacques' public presentation will be in French but he will answer questions in both official languages. The Municipal Council may need public support to be able to protect this valuable environment. Please consider expressing your interest/or concerns by attending the meeting or sending a message to the Municipal Council, particularly if you have expertise on the problems the Council is facing.
