14 Common Redpolls were chatting quietly to each other as they fed in alders
at the NE corner of Thickson's Woods about 1pm today, Saturday December 4th.
These must be almost the first redpolls I've heard of in southern Ontario.
A few White-winged Crossbills were feeding in the tops of the pines and a
flock of over 30 Pine Siskins was at Dennis Barry and Margaret Carney's
feeder on the south side of the woods.
An adult Northern Goshawk went over like a thunderbolt and I also saw a
couple of Sharpies, suggesting a small accipter flight, perhaps brought on
by the cold NW winds.
The Great Horned Owl was easily found sitting out on a pine branch.
Both nuthatches were busy, but I didn't find any kinglets, creepers or
wrens.

Directions: From Hwy.401 go south on Thickson Road, Exit 412 until you see
the pine woods on the east side of the road.
Park on Thickson Road and walk to the woods by the Waterfront Trail which
runs on the north side of the woods.
