Ontbirds subscribers,
As Margaret Bain has posted earlier, there was a nice little flurry of winter
finches around Thickson's Woods this afternoon. In the last three hours of the
afternoon I had 4 Common Redpolls and 18 Pine Siskins coming to my feeders. I
saw several flocks of Purple Finches on the move westward over my house (45 in
total) and I had both crossbill species land in the large Eastern White Pines
in front of my house (2 Red Crossbills and 6 White-winged Crossbills). The last
couple of days there has been a Belted Kingfisher hanging around the bluff in
front of my house. A Red-bellied Woodpecker continues to come to both Dennis
Barry and Margaret Carney's feeder as well as one of mine daily. A flock of 18
Snow Buntings flew past my house along the lakefront headed west around 3:30.
Four White-throated Sparrows have been visiting my feeders usually accompanied
by a flock of a dozen or more Dark-eyed Juncos.
Directions: From Hwy.401 go south on Thickson Road S. at Exit 412 until you see
the Eastern White Pine woods on the east side of the road near the cul-de-sac
for parking for the Waterfront trail. Take the Waterfront Trail east along the
north side of the woods to the north entrance.
