Bald Eagles have become abundant this week; they were seen at Adolphoustown, Bedford Mills, Moscow, Bath, Waupoos, Prince Edward Point and on both Wolfe and Amherst Islands. There was a Merlin in Amherstview and a Rough-legged Hawk at PEPt to add to the good numbers already on the islands. There was a Great Horned Owl at Bedford Mills and a Barred at PEPt. Amherst had 5 species of owl, all singletons except for Short-eared. A Glaucous Gull was at Bath last Saturday and Wednesday and a Harlequin Duck was off RMC on Sunday. A Common Loon was at Jones Falls on Saturday and two more were off the Psychiatric Hospital on Wednesday. A Horned Grebe was off Amherst Island on the 22nd. A N. Shrike was seen at Bedford Mills and Common Redpolls have become more widespread. A Hoary was reported at a feeder just north of the city out Montreal Street. Other "winter" birds included 200 Bohemian Waxwings at Violet a week ago and 30 Horned Larks at Waupoos on Wednesday.The flock of Pine Siskins at Camden East continues to expand and at times is a very animated 100 or so birds. The Varied Thrush is still visiting the Moscow feeder as is the White-crowned Sparrow at Camden East. There were still 2 Killdeer at Bath, a N. Flicker and 30 Am. Robins at Waupoos, another 20 Robins and a White-throated Sparrow at PEPt; all reported on Wednesday. A Great Blue Heron was near the Bath Road on Tuesday. An unusual observation was a Ruffed Grouse drumming at 10:30 last Sunday night near Camden East. The Prince Edward County CBC was held on Saturday and tallied 69 species; some of the highlights were Red-throated Loon, Cackling Goose, Ruddy Duck, E. Bluebird and Am. Pipit. The Kingston CBC was held Sunday and currently stands at 101 species with a few feeder watchers still to report. I did receive a heatwarming email from a proud grandfather who took his grandson out to see the Varied Thrush at Moscow on Tuesday. Not only did they get the thrush but the young birder added Ring-necked Pheasant and Bald Eagle to his life list.
