Happy New Year Ontario Birders: Thanks for your personal e-mails and postings to Ontbirds since the last update to the Ontario Winter List for 2010/2011. The total winter list to New Year's Day is now 194 species and 2 races, up 19 species and 1 race since the last posting. That is 2 species more than the entire winter list for 2009/2010 and 3 species short of the total winter list for 2008/2009. The complete updated list for 2010/2011 will be posted to http://tinyurl.com/onwinter in the next couple days.
Most of the regularly occurring winter species have now been seen and reported, including all the waterfowl, woodpeckers, and most of the passerines. Still missing are: Eared Grebe; Gyrfalcon; Virginia Rail; Sabine's Gull; Marsh Wren and a couple of the hardier Warblers. So keep your eyes out for those species, and, of course, anything new and exciting. There have been some notable sightings since the first update of the Winter List, including: Blue-winged Teal; the 4 (or 5) Black Vultures in the Hamilton area; Ruddy Turnstone; Pectoral Sandpiper; Cape May Warbler; and, Lincoln's Sparrow. Good birding.
