At -21C this morning it will be a better day to feederwatch than scan the fog
for waterfowl. However, last weekend the KFN participated in the annual
Mid-winter Waterfowl Count and tallied 113,000 birds between Ivy Lea and Prince
Edward Point. Almost half of these were the 48,000 Greater Scaup off the east
end of Prince Edward County. Rarities included 3 Cackling Geese and 3 Barrow's
Goldeneye. There were 2 Wood Ducks at Napanee on Tuesday and another two at
Kingston Mills yesterday.
Owls reported this week were an E. Screech on Howe Island last Sunday, 2 Barred
at Lemoine Pt. on Wednesday and another at Bedford Mills yesterday. A
Sharp-shinned Hawk visited Bedford Mills on Friday and Wednesday and an injured
N. Goshawk was picked up at Queen's this week and delivered to the Sandy Pines
Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Napanee.
Depending on your particular feeder you are getting at least a few if not a lot
of Am. Tree Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos, Am. Goldfinches, Pine Siskins and
Common Redpolls. At least two Hoary Redpolls were seen this week. Other
sightings of note were a N. Shrike on Howe Island on Sunday, 76 Wild Turkeys
near Hay Bay on Tuesday and over a hundred Horned Larks (in two flocks) along
the Palace Road south of Newburgh yesterday.
Cheers,
Peter Good
