This afternoon shortly after 3 pm on the north east corner of Holborn and Woodbine rds between Newmarket and Sutton, a falcon sat clearly visible on a branch about 12 feet off the ground. When it flew off the tail bands were very indicative of a Merlin. But three characteristics flew in the face of such an identification. The moustache was not vague but clear. The streaking on the underparts stopped rather abruptly just below the chest. Most pertinently, this bird was much too large for a Merlin.
