February 23 - Traveling along the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara Falls I observed: In Fort Erie: Red-breasted Merganser 1,700 Common Goldeneye 2,980 Long-tailed Duck 15 Bufflehead 2,850 Greater Scaup 580 American Black Duck 72 Mallard 127 Redhead 305 Common Merganser 650 White-winged Scoter 2 Tundra Swan 270 & Mute Swan 2 - near the south tip of Grand Island In Niagara Falls: Great Blue Heron 1 Hooded Merganser 10 Am. Wigeon 9 Purple Sandpiper 1 about 100 meters of Dufferin Island Gadwall 12 Golden-crowned Kinglet 1 At Sir Adam Beck there was 1 Iceland Gull and 1 Glaucous Gull and very few Gulls. At Navy Island seen from from the NY water control intakes I saw two eagle nest on Navy Island. An adult Bald Eagle was sitting on the more southern nest turning its head and even pointing its bill upward and calling once. Also on the New York side of the River there were two adult Bald Eagles on Strawberry Island and 47 Great Blue Herons, all of which were standing on or near nests, except for one that was sitting on a nest!
