Hi Ontbirders
On April 5th, I also saw the Gyrfalcon in exactly the same field as previously
reported, (Allanport Road and Barron Road near Thorold). Despite returning a
few times and scouting the area since, I have not seen the bird again. While
driving along the Niagara River, on April 6th, there were about 36 Horned
Grebes scattered upriver of the falls near Chippawa. Jim and I also saw a
beautiful Common Loon in breeding plumage. The loon was not very shy and
allowed us to approach close enough to see it clearly without binoculars.
Spectacular. And our first Great Egret was seen in Martindale pond in St.
Catharines along with about 4 beavers in there too.
Directions to Chippawa
QEW Niagara bound, exit Lyons Creek Road, turn to the left(east) and continue
until you reach Chippawa. Go straight through the stoplight at Lyon's Creek
Road and PortageRoad/Willoughby Drive and you will reach the Niagara River were
we saw the Grebes. Between here and downriver to the left, we saw the Horned
Grebes and the Loon.
Martindale Pond St. Catharines from Niagara take Martindale Road exit, turn to
the left onto Martindale Road, and the Green Ribbon Trail/Martindale Pond where
we saw the Egret and beaver is on the left hand side in a slight dip in the
road. Good Birding.....................Astrid Akkerman
