May 20 - While counting Double-crested Cormorant nests on the islands above the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario, I also counted 12 Great Egrets (4 of which appeared to be in incubating positions). Observations were difficult because of the fog over the water. I also counted 168 Double-crested Cormorants, 86 cormorant nests, and 61 Black-crowned Night-Herons on the islands. The observations were made from Goat Island, New York. Also on Goat Island were 42 bird species, 7 were warbler species. In the Niagara River Gorge about a quarter of a mile downstream from the Rainbow Bridge were a Harlequin Duck (very close to an adult male Common Goldeneye) and further downstream two adult male Common Mergansers. These were viewed in New York from the Discovery Center, which can be accessed from the Robert Moses Parkway north. The Harlequin Duck was below "Michael's Inn" in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
